Your stomach makes acid to digest food. This is normal and healthy.
Trouble starts when this stomach acid moves upward into the food pipe (oesophagus). This is called acid reflux.
At the lower end of the food pipe, there is a small muscle. It acts like a valve. It opens to let food in and closes to keep acid down. When this valve becomes weak or relaxes at the wrong time, acid escapes upward.
This causes burning, indigestion and discomfort. Doctors call the long-term form of this problem GERD.
Acidity happens when stomach acid moves up into the food pipe. Occasional acidity can be managed with diet and habits. If it happens two or more times a week, see a gastroenterologist. It may be GERD.
Symptoms differ from person to person. Some feel it in the chest. Others feel it in the throat or stomach.
Common symptoms include:
Many people notice acidity after eating food, especially after heavy, oily or spicy meals. This kind of acid reflux after meals is very common.
There is rarely one single reason. Usually, a mix of food habits, lifestyle and body factors causes acidity.
Food and drink triggers
Lifestyle triggers
Medical triggers
Finding your personal trigger is the first step towards lasting relief.
Everyone gets acidity once in a while. That is normal.
But if you have acidity or heartburn two or more times a week, it may be GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
GERD is a long-term condition. Over time, it can irritate the food pipe, cause ulcers and narrow the passage. In some people, it can lead to more serious changes.
Warning signs of GERD:
If you notice these signs, do not wait. Get a proper reflux evaluation.
Diagnosis starts with a detailed gastroenterologist consultation. The doctor asks about your symptoms, food habits, sleep, medicines and family history. A physical check-up follows.
In many patients, this is enough to start treatment. But if symptoms are severe, long-lasting or unusual, we advise further tests.
Tests we may suggest:
These tests help us find the exact cause. Then we choose the right treatment, not just a quick fix.
Every patient is different. So we plan acidity management step by step, after a careful check-up. The goal is simple: relieve symptoms, heal the food pipe and stop acidity from coming back.
Our approach to treatment for chronic acidity and GERD treatment has four levels. Most patients improve with the first two. Surgery is advised only when truly needed.
For mild acidity, simple changes in food and routine often give good relief.
Our Gut Diet and Nutrition Specialist, Dt. Bhushan Khedkar, prepares a personal acidity diet plan that suits your taste and daily routine.
Acid-reducing medicines lower acid levels and help the food pipe heal. These are the most common treatment for heartburn and acid reflux.
We prescribe the right medicine, at the right dose, for the right duration. Please do not take acidity medicines for months on your own. Long-term use should always be under medical advice.
Reflux treatment works best when the real cause is found and treated.
Some patients do not get enough relief from medicines. Others have a large hiatus hernia or do not wish to take medicines for life. For them, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery may be a good option.
Surgery may be advised when:
The most common procedure is laparoscopic fundoplication. The surgeon wraps the upper part of the stomach around the lower food pipe. This strengthens the valve and stops acid from moving up. If a hiatus hernia is present, it is repaired in the same surgery.
This is where Dr. Samrat Jankar brings his strength. With 17+ years of experience and 3,000+ laparoscopic surgeries, he performs this as a keyhole procedure. Benefits include:
Food can calm acidity or make it worse. Every person reacts differently. But these foods are generally well tolerated:
Keep a small food diary for two weeks. Note what you ate and when acidity came. It helps you find your own triggers.
Our Gut Diet and Nutrition Specialist, Dt. Bhushan Khedkar, has 15+ years’ experience. He can prepare a personal acidity diet plan for you.
These foods that trigger acid reflux are common in many Indian homes:
You do not need to give up all of them forever. First, reduce the ones that clearly trigger your symptoms.
Small habits can bring big relief. Try these lifestyle changes for acidity:
Many patients tell us, “Doctor, I take a tablet and I feel fine. But acidity returns in a few days.”
This happens because antacids only give short relief. They do not treat the cause.
Common reasons for repeated acidity:
Without a proper diagnosis, the cycle continues. A clear plan from a specialist helps you break it.

Important: If you have severe chest pain, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, go to the nearest emergency room first. This could be a heart problem.

Daily acidity usually means something is triggering acid reflux again and again. Common reasons are oily or spicy food, skipped meals, late dinners, stress, smoking, obesity and a weak valve at the lower end of the food pipe. Hiatus hernia and H. pylori infection can also be the cause. If you have acidity almost every day, it may be GERD. A gastroenterologist consultation helps find the exact reason. At Kaizen Gastro Care, Dr. Samrat Jankar and Dr. Vikrant Kale evaluate the cause before starting treatment.
When you lie flat, stomach acid flows up into the food pipe more easily. Gravity no longer helps to keep it down. Late and heavy dinners make night-time acid reflux worse. You may feel burning in the chest, acid in throat, sour burps or a dry cough. To reduce it, finish dinner 2 to 3 hours before sleeping. Raise the head end of your bed by 6 to 8 inches. Sleep on your left side. If night-time symptoms continue, get a reflux evaluation.
Sit upright and sip water slowly. Avoid lying down and loosen tight clothes. Take a short, gentle walk. Avoid tea, coffee, fried food and cold drinks for some time. Take acidity medicines only as advised by your doctor. Quick relief is only temporary. If you need it again and again, it is a sign to get checked for the real cause.
It can be. Acidity or heartburn two or more times a week may be GERD. Other signs are regurgitation, night-time acid reflux, throat irritation and difficulty swallowing. Upper GI endoscopy for acidity and tests like esophageal pH monitoring help confirm GERD. Early GERD treatment can prevent damage to the food pipe.
There is no doubt that drinking water has numerous health benefits for the stomach. It is known that warm water can not only help clear toxins from the body but also aid in digestion by breaking down food and improving the function of the digestive system. So if you suffer from digestion-related problems then drinking a cup of warm water regularly might provide some respite.
Lemon can help in neutralizing the acid in the stomach even though it is acidic. Drinking a glass of lemon water regularly can exert an alkalizing effect when it is digested.
This happens because stomach acid moves up into the food pipe after a meal. Large, oily or spicy meals are common triggers. Lying down soon after eating also adds to it. A weak lower valve or hiatus hernia may be the hidden reason. If this is acidity after eating food on most days, please consult an acidity specialist.
Try to limit these foods that trigger acid reflux:
Triggers differ for each person. A food diary helps you find yours. Our diet specialist, Dt. Bhushan Khedkar, can prepare a personal acidity diet plan.
Many people get long-term control with the right diet, habits and treatment. Acidity returns when the cause is not treated. Antacids alone give only short relief. Treating H. pylori, hiatus hernia, weight and food triggers helps prevent repeat episodes. In selected GERD patients, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery gives lasting control. Your doctor will guide you after proper evaluation.
